Tobi had an eye on this line for quite a while now. Information, apart from random photos and webcam images from poor angles, practically does not exist. So we decided to give it a try and skied it on sight.
Bockkogel, central west-couloir
40-45° 600m, PD+, 4.3, E2
At the end of January we still had doubts about the quantity and quality of snow in there. Instead of hitting this line, we went to the area of the Winnebachseehütte / Hoher Seeblaskogel at my suggestion back then. After an enforced pause of several weeks (🤧) and unfortunately little change in the snow depth, last weekend we went again to the Stubai Alps. Without much hope for good snow, we set off on a ski tour in the immediate vicinity of the Amberger Hütte. The weather was perfect, but the snow on the ascend was of poor quality for a long time. We initially followed the route towards the well-known “Schrankogel”, but soon left the track to turn towards the summit of “Bockkogel”. We had the whole mountain to ourselves and, according to the hut wardens, hardly any ski alpinists go up there. The couloir then extends over 600 vertical meters to the west. After a few meters of descent on foot, the couloir unexpectedly offered both: good powder snow but also 2-3 rocky steep steps further down. Fortunately, these steps posed no problem for us and we were able to descend the couloir safely.
The couloir starts at around 40° and is rather wide and easy to ski, nothing special, though.
After around 1/3 down, the line becomes remarkably steeper (around 45°) and is also deeper entrenched into the mountain. Towering walls of granite rock surround you as you ski down. A real gem for couloir lovers.
Be aware that there might be some rocky steps of varying heights during the descend.
